Open Vascular Surgery

Decades of research with proven results

Overview

Open Vascular Surgery is used to treat many vascular conditions, though typically minimally invasive techniques are preferred when possible. For open vascular surgery, your surgeon will generally create a long incision to directly access the blood vessel, vein, or artery that needs treatment. This will typically be done in an operating room with general anesthesia, though local anesthesia or sedation may be used depending on the specific case. Dr. Chaudry has surgical privileges at Christiana Care (both the Cecil Campus and Main Campus), as well as Upper Chesapeake!

Recovery

Recovery time for open vascular surgery tends to range from a couple weeks to a few months, largely depending on the complexity of the procedure. A general timeline for recovery would be that the patient stays in the hospital for a few days after the surgery, then being discharged to recover at home. During home recovery, the patient should avoid lifting heavy objects (those 10 lbs. or more) and will often have restrictions that stops them from operating heavy machinery.
